Assam flood situation improves as death toll reaches 75; lakhs remain affected

The flood situation in Assam is showing signs of improvement, but the disaster has claimed seven more lives, raising the year’s death toll to 75. Earlier figures placed the toll at 68, according to the latest DRIMS Assam Flood Report referenced in the update.
The report says floods are currently affecting seven districts: Sivasagar, Charaideo, Golaghat, Jorhat, Nagaon, Sonitpur and Kamrup (Metro). It also mentions that 21 revenue circles and 622 villages are still inundated.
Relief camps running in affected districts
While water levels are slowly receding in several areas, relief and rescue work continues. The bulletin lists 115 relief camps and relief distribution centres that are operational across the flood-affected districts. It also states that around 3,32,639 people are affected, and about 45,341.98 hectares of cropland remain submerged.
In terms of shelter, the report mentions that 32,477 people are taking refuge in relief camps. Among the districts, Sivasagar is identified as the worst-affected area, accounting for all seven flood-related deaths reported in the latest DRIMS bulletin.
River levels and state response
Officials are monitoring river levels. The Dhansiri (South) River at Numaligarh is still flowing above the danger level, though no river is currently reported to be above the highest flood level.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced a relief and rehabilitation package for affected families. The update says families of those who died in flood-related incidents will receive the statutory ₹4 lakh ex gratia, without the requirement of a post-mortem. For people missing for more than 30 days, eligibility for ₹4 lakh ex gratia is linked to the legal process.
The state also plans additional support, including an extra ₹5 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund for families of the deceased, and immediate cash assistance of ₹15,000 each for more than one lakh severely flood-affected families. Sarma also said Orunodoi assistance will resume from August 1 for beneficiaries in Charaideo, Jorhat, Golaghat and Sivasagar.
