One NVG member killed, five injured in firing in Noney, Manipur

One member of the Naga Village Guard (NVG) was killed and five others were injured in an exchange of fire in Manipur’s Noney district, police said. The incident took place during a security operation in the Bitiang area under the Tupul subdivision.

The deceased was identified as Lanbilung Riamei (22). Police said he was the son of Kadirang Riamei of Longmai Noney Bazaar and later died from his injuries.

Two CRPF personnel and three NVG members hurt

Police said two CoBRA commandos of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) were among the injured. Head Constable Radheshyam and Constable (General Duty) Jitendra Kumar sustained minor injuries, according to information shared by police sources.

In addition, three NVG members suffered serious bullet injuries. Their identities were not immediately confirmed in the available details. Police also indicated that the injured are likely to be moved to Imphal for further medical treatment.

Operation, disrupted communications, and continued security

Local sources said the CRPF’s CoBRA unit began an operation early on Wednesday at Bitiang village, where an NVG training camp is reportedly located. During the operation, an exchange of fire broke out, leading to the death of the NVG member and injuries to others.

Police sources and locals also reported that communication networks in the Bitiang-Tupul area were severely disrupted after the incident. Heavy security deployment, including CoBRA personnel, continued in the area following the firing.

After reports of the operation, the Working Committee of the Joint Tribe Council (JTC), Manipur announced an immediate and indefinite shutdown across areas inhabited by the Inpui, Liangmai, Rongmei and Zeme communities. Essential services, including healthcare and telecommunications, were said to be exempted from the shutdown.

Police and security agencies have not released a detailed official statement on the events that led to the exchange of fire.
