Mizoram gets ₹10 crore under CBDRR to boost village disaster preparedness

Mizoram has been earmarked ₹10 crore under the Community-Based Disaster Risk Reduction (CBDRR) programme. The allocation is meant to strengthen disaster preparedness at the village level, with work focused on local planning and community capacity.
The decision came up during a high-level review meeting in New Delhi. The meeting was chaired with the involvement of Mizoram Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Minister Prof. Lalnilawma, along with officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).
Planning, safer systems and community response
Officials said the CBDRR programme will help build disaster-resilient villages by improving how communities prepare for risks. Key areas include strengthening village-level disaster planning, improving preparedness, and supporting safer building systems through better local processes.
The review also covered how disaster mitigation projects are moving forward in the state. It included discussions on Mizoram’s broader plan for long-term disaster resilience and the need to ensure that approved projects progress smoothly.
Landslide work and coordination with technical agencies
Separate from the CBDRR allocation, the meeting reviewed implementation of the National Landslide Risk Mitigation Programme. The MHA advised the state to work closely with the Geological Survey of India (GSI) for technical work such as digital elevation models and slope investigations. The ministry noted that GSI has indicated it will provide technical assistance.
On landslide projects, the minister stressed early execution through coordination involving the GSI and the Public Works Department. The meeting also noted the importance of submitting Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) and technical documentation on time so that further financial instalments can be released. Mizoram’s disaster department said it has started reviewing pending proposals and will prioritize DPR submission.
The discussions further examined risks faced by Mizoram, including landslides, rockfalls, earthquake risk and challenges linked to rapid urban growth in Aizawl. The MHA also encouraged the state to follow the Union Home Minister’s 10-point Disaster Resilience Agenda, including strengthening state and district disaster management capacities.
