Sikkim Education Department reviews plan to weave special numeracy training into D.El.Ed curriculum
Education minister Raju Basnet chaired a meeting on embedding foundational numeracy and special pedagogical approaches into the D.El.Ed curriculum through DIETs
Education minister Raju Basnet chaired a meeting at his chamber in the Tashiling Secretariat to discuss improvements in teacher education and early mathematics learning. The meeting brought together senior officials from the Education department, SCERT, and representatives from Jodo Gyan, New Delhi.
The main focus was on how to embed Foundational Numeracy within the Diploma in Elementary Education (D.El.Ed.) curriculum conducted through District Institutes of Education and Training (DIETs). Officials from SCERT and the Jodo Gyan team shared an update on implementation and progress of a state initiative that targets early learning in mathematics.

CM-SNP approach discussed for DIET training
Under the Chief Minister Special Numeracy Programme (CM-SNP), mathematics teaching in government primary schools has been strengthened using experiential and activity-based methods. The programme is implemented jointly by SCERT and Jodo Gyan Educational Services, with teacher capacity-building and classroom support intended to make learning more interactive and learner-centric.
As part of the discussion, officials described how the approach has been supported by training for teachers. The release said that during the academic year 2025-26, nearly 1,100 teachers were trained. The programme is also described as encouraging students’ confidence, curiosity, and a more positive attitude towards mathematics.
Special Numeracy Pedagogical Framework to be institutionalised
Beyond DIET curriculum changes, the meeting also examined integrating the Special Numeracy Pedagogical Framework into the D.El.Ed programme. The goal is to institutionalise these teaching practices within pre-service teacher education so that innovative classroom methods can become part of routine training before new teachers begin their careers.
At the meeting, the minister emphasised that strong foundational literacy and numeracy are the basis for quality education and improved learning outcomes. He said that bringing proven classroom methods into teacher education can help make newly trained teachers classroom-ready from the start. The minister also acknowledged the collaboration between SCERT and Jodo Gyan and asked stakeholders to continue working toward an engaging, inclusive, and competency-based learning environment for students across the state.
