Nagaland Governor reviews Agriculture schemes, urges focus on sustainable farming

Nagaland Governor Nand Kishore Yadav chaired a review meeting of the Department of Agriculture at Lok Bhavan in Kohima on Tuesday. Officials presented an overview of ongoing agriculture schemes, their outcomes, current challenges, and plans for the coming period for the state’s farming sector.
The meeting covered steps to improve agricultural productivity and promote sustainable farming. Department officials also discussed efforts to strengthen irrigation infrastructure, expand mechanisation, and support farmers’ income through centrally sponsored programmes and state initiatives. Officials further shared the state’s agriculture profile, including production targets and progress under different programmes.
Major schemes and farming workforce
Officials said agriculture remains central to Nagaland’s economy, with about 70% of the population engaged in farming. They also noted that women form a large share of the agricultural workforce, accounting for about 65% of those working in agriculture. The review detailed implementation progress and focus areas under multiple schemes, including Krishonnati Yojana, PM-RKVY, PM-Kisan, and SMAM.
The department briefing included initiatives connected with nutrition and food security, organic practices, and natural farming. Officials discussed the NFSNM, the National Mission on Natural Farming, the Mission Organic Value Chain Development for North Eastern Region (MOVCD-NER), and the National Mission on Edible Oils. They also covered Rainfed Area Development and Agroforestry, along with Per Drop More Crop (PDMC) for water management.
Connectivity and land issues highlighted
In addition to achievements, the meeting reviewed constraints affecting farmers. Officials pointed to issues such as fragmented landholdings, inadequate infrastructure, and difficult terrain that can limit road connectivity. The Governor stressed that these gaps should be addressed through effective scheme implementation and better coordination among stakeholders.
Officials also briefed the Governor on steps to expand oil palm cultivation, promote organic and natural farming, develop water harvesting infrastructure, strengthen farmer training and capacity building, and improve market linkages for agricultural produce. Senior officers from the Governor’s Secretariat and Department of Agriculture officials attended the meeting.
