Pakyong district officials review restoration and safety steps for Barapathing-Rongli road stretch
A review meeting in Pakyong assessed damage and safety measures for the Barapathing-Rongli stretch after a bridge collapse and adjoining landslide-affected area
Pakyong District Collector Pari Bishnoi, along with Additional District Collector Pulkit, chaired a review meeting at the District Administrative Centre in Pakyong. The meeting focused on the Barapathing-Rongli road stretch and the observations collected from site inspections related to the affected area.
Inspecting damage after bridge collapse
Officials discussed the extent of damage and the findings from a joint inspection held on July 23, following the collapse of the Barapathing Bridge and the landslide-affected stretch nearby. The review also looked at how much road restoration work is ongoing and what safety steps are required as part of long-term planning.
During the meeting, the Collector directed departments to share the original Detailed Project Report (DPR) for a proposed bridge at the Barapathing road stretch. She also asked for details on the technical and geological assessments already carried out in the affected area, and instructed concerned departments to submit comprehensive technical reports at the earliest.
Officials reviewed a range of work needed to reduce risk around the damaged stretch. Discussions included slope protection measures, construction of retaining walls, debris clearance, and drainage management. The meeting also touched on long-term mitigation strategies for the vulnerable area.
Debris disposal sites and coordination
On debris disposal, the DFO(T) informed the group about proposed dumping sites. A detailed report on the identified dumping locations and their current status was requested, and officials reviewed concerns about unauthorised debris dumping in the area.
NHIDCL and the GI Hydro Project shared inputs on issues connected to the affected region and the restoration efforts. The Collector said coordination among departments must be strengthened and long-term measures should be developed to protect public infrastructure, adding that residents and students should not face hardship due to delays. She further noted that a Geological and Slope Stability Assessment Report is being prepared by the Mines & Geology Department and that decisions will follow once the report is received and evaluated. The meeting also included officials such as DFO(T), SP Bhutia, SDM Pakyong, ACF(T) Pakyong, and RO/AD Pakyong.
