Achievements cited for India’s sports honour

Jadhav noted that Chanu has already received several major sporting recognitions. He mentioned the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award and the Padma Shri, along with an Olympic medal. Despite these honours, the Minister said Chanu’s childhood dream of receiving the Arjuna Award has not been fulfilled yet.

The recommendation also points to Chanu’s journey from her village in Manipur to the highest levels of international sport. Jadhav said her rise shows determination, perseverance, and dedication, and that her story continues to inspire young athletes. He described her as an example of how long-term training and focus can lead to international success.

Focus on contribution to Indian weightlifting

The Minister added that awarding Chanu the Arjuna Award would be a fitting recognition of her sporting achievements, talent, and contribution to Indian sport. He stressed that honouring her would also reflect the impact she has had on weightlifting in the country.

With the Arjuna Award nomination now under consideration by the sports ministry, the recommendation adds to the visibility around Chanu’s achievements as the year’s national sports awards approach.
