CEC says India polls follow Constitution, election laws as media learns electoral process

Chief Election Commissioner of India Gyanesh Kumar said on Friday that elections in the country are conducted strictly under the Constitution, election laws and the directions issued by the Election Commission of India (ECI). He said the electoral process is designed around constitutional provisions and a legal framework meant to support elections that are free, fair, transparent and credible.
Speaking at the All India Media Conference 2026 at the India International Institute of Democracy and Election Management (IIIDEM) in Dwarka, the CEC also highlighted the role of structured rules in ensuring public confidence in the election process. The conference was held under the theme “Connecting Stakeholders, Strengthening Democracy: Role of Media in Elections.”

Media focus on verified reporting and democratic transparency
The programme brought together media professionals from across India. Journalists representing Sikkim took part along with an official from the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer, Sikkim. IIIDEM Director General Rakesh Kumar Verma stressed the need for continued institutional learning and professional capacity building, along with constructive engagement between election authorities and the media.
Director General (Media) Ashish Goyal said media is an important stakeholder for the ECI. He underlined the importance of factual reporting and timely sharing of verified information to limit misinformation and support trust in elections.
Technology, law and election procedures presented
Director General (IT) Dr. Seema Khanna introduced participants to the ECINet platform, saying it supports integrated digital systems, real-time monitoring, improved service delivery and transparency. DDG (Law) Vijay Kumar Pandey presented constitutional provisions, election laws and recent court judgments that guide election conduct.
The session also explained election rolls preparation, polling and vote counting. Deputy Director Apurva Kumar Singh discussed the roles of Booth Level Agents, Polling Agents and Counting Agents in maintaining transparency during the full election cycle. The event included presentations on election laws, electoral rolls, polling procedures, counting and the use of technology, along with live demonstrations and question-and-answer interactions with ECI officials.
