The Tourism and Civil Aviation Department of Sikkim conducted a follow-up recce for the proposed Bakuchen–Tamzey Trekking Trail to support sustainable adventure tourism. The one-day field inspection was held on July 17 and focused on the route from Tamzey to the Bakuchen valley along the Tsomgo axis.
The inspection team, led by Hondala Gyaltsen, Secretary of the department, carried out a detailed review of the trail’s feasibility. Officials assessed factors such as accessibility, ecological sensitivity, safety parameters, and overall tourism potential, with the aim of meeting the department’s guidelines for safe and responsible trekking destinations.

Technical checks on route, campsites and safety
Kazi Sherpa, Joint Director (Adventure), presented a technical assessment during the recce. The evaluation covered route alignment and the terrain profile, including altitude gradients. It also examined campsite suitability, the availability of water sources, environmental considerations, and other technical requirements needed for developing a trekking route to established standards.
During the visit, the team also evaluated the trail’s terrain, access points, scenic value, and the infrastructure it would require. Local community members and stakeholders were included in interactions, which helped officials understand how the area’s tourism potential could be shaped with community participation in mind.
Army support for secure movement during the inspection
Army personnel of 11GR of the Indian Army supported the recce by providing security and ensuring the safe movement of the inspection team in the area. The department later expressed appreciation for the cooperation, noting that the support contributed to completing the field assessment.
The proposal places the trail within a landscape of forests and mountain scenery and highlights Tamzey’s rich biodiversity, including wildflower blooms during the summer months. The department said the trekking route is intended to promote eco-tourism, showcase the region’s natural wealth, and help create sustainable livelihood opportunities for local communities through responsible tourism.
