Motivated by the idea that many people across India still do not know where Sikkim is located or what part of the country it belongs to, young Joshan Rai from Kumrek under West Pandam decided to take his message beyond the State. After travelling widely, he returned to Sikkim on Wednesday.
Travel campaign to build wider recognition
According to organizers, Rai undertook a journey by seeking rides and backpacking across all 28 Indian states. During the trip, he met people from different places and shared basic information about Sikkim’s geographical location, cultural life, tourism and its identity.
The effort was aimed at creating stronger national awareness and making Sikkim easier to recognize across the country. Rai’s initiative also reflected a belief that even decades after Sikkim’s merger with India, many remain unfamiliar with the State.
Community welcome in Kumrek
On his return, the Kumrek Kursha Sudhar Samiti Samaj organized a welcome ceremony for Rai. He was felicitated with a traditional khada, flower garlands, and a memento. The event included participation from Ward Panchayat Dik Bahadur Bhujel, Samiti president JB Basnet, committee members and local youths.
JB Basnet said Rai had helped bring recognition not only to Kumrek, but also to the wider State of Sikkim through his work. He also urged the younger generation to take inspiration from Rai’s dedication and positive approach.
SKM youth wing functionary Sanjeet Pradhan also praised the campaign. He said he and the party would continue to support constructive initiatives like this in the future. Pradhan added that Rai’s example stands out at a time when many young people face pressure from harmful activities, and his efforts were seen as a meaningful alternative.
