AASU asks Assam CM for impartial, time-bound probe into alleged assault of Mizoram minors

The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) has taken up a case involving two minor girls from Mizoram who were allegedly gang-raped and sexually assaulted in Assam’s Cachar district. AASU has written to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, seeking an investigation that is thorough, impartial and completed within a set time.
The intervention came after Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP) raised the matter with AASU and asked it to engage with the Assam government and the investigating authorities. AASU said it was concerned about the reported incident and wanted the process to move forward without undue influence.
AASU says arrest is only the start of the process
In its letter to the chief minister, AASU acknowledged that Assam Police acted promptly by arresting the accused and beginning legal proceedings. The student body, however, said that an arrest should be followed by an investigation that examines every aspect of the incident, rather than stopping at the initial action.
AASU used the term “watertight” to describe the probe it wants, and asked for it to be free from pressure or interference. It also called for expeditious prosecution in the relevant court and said any persons found responsible should face exemplary punishment based on the gravity of the crime.
Students from outside Assam should be protected
The AASU letter also asked the Assam government to monitor the investigation closely and to take measures that protect the safety and dignity of students from other parts of the Northeast who travel to Assam.
According to the case details shared in the report, the alleged victims are minors from Kolasib district in Mizoram. They were reportedly abducted and assaulted in Cachar district. Assam Police have arrested three men connected with the case and initiated proceedings under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.
