A special screening of the Nepali biographical sports film ‘Anjila’ will be held in Gangtok on August 20 at Vajra Cinema. The film is based on the real-life journey of Anjila Tumbapo Subba, a captain and goalkeeper of Nepal’s women’s national football team.
The event is being organised by Sada Production, Sikkim, after a press conference held in the Journalists Union of Sikkim. The screening is expected to be followed by a Pan-India re-release of the film.
Organisers link the story to sports and inspiration
Speaking at the press conference, Sada Production founder Shyamashree Sherpa said that art, literature and sports can connect people across regions. She described Anjila’s rise from a humble family background and the challenges she faced in her early years as key parts of what makes the film engaging.
Sikkim Football Association general secretary Phurba Sherpa said the association has long known Anjila as a talented footballer. He expressed confidence that her story would inspire aspiring players in Sikkim. Sherpa also pointed to the ongoing cooperation between the Sikkim Football Association and the All Nepal Football Association, saying this support has been seen during the annual Governor’s Gold Cup, when ANFA has supported SFA’s team selection.
Open invite for football fans
Dr. Bibek Tiwari, vice president of the Futsal Association of Sikkim, welcomed the special screening as an opportunity for people in the state to learn more about a prominent sports personality. He said futsal is still at an early stage in Sikkim and that his association plans to organise interactions and matches with Nepali players in the future. Tiwari added that encouraging promising footballers and athletes remains important for the development of sports in the region.
Directed by Milan Chams, the film presents Anjila’s life journey, highlighting themes such as dreams, determination, resilience and perseverance. The story also focuses on the sacrifices made behind athletic success, including the barriers faced by women pursuing their ambitions in sport. A distinctive element noted by the organisers is that Anjila Tumbapo Subba portrays herself in the lead role. The film features actors including Dayahang Rai, Srijana Subba, Maotse Gurung, Bijay Baral and Sunil Thapa.
