The flood situation in Assam stayed critical on Saturday, with the death toll rising to 61, according to the latest Disaster Reporting and Information Management System (DRIMS) report. The update cites 14 additional flood-related deaths.
The new deaths were reported from several districts. Seven people died in Charaideo, six in Sivasagar, and one in Jorhat, the report said. The overall impact remains severe, with many areas still cut off from rescue support.
Hundreds of villages inundated, crops still submerged
The flood bulletin says 7,05,148 people have been affected across 12 districts. Floodwaters have inundated 856 villages under 37 revenue circles. Cropland continues to be impacted, with more than 56,606 hectares still submerged.
Sivasagar is reported as the worst-hit district, with 3,48,555 affected people. It is followed by Charaideo (1,88,404) and Jorhat (1,26,793). Alongside these, the bulletin lists districts including Golaghat, Dibrugarh, Hojai, Nagaon, Biswanath, Dhemaji, Sonitpur, Kamrup (Metro), and Karbi Anglong among the affected areas.
Relief camps open; rivers above danger level
Relief and shelter arrangements are expanding. The report states that 363 relief camps and relief distribution centres have been opened across affected districts. In total, 1,15,205 people are taking shelter in camps, while relief assistance is being provided to more than two lakh people through distribution centres.
Rivers including the Dikhou, Disang, Dhansiri (South), and Kushiyara are still flowing above the danger level, the update said. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also stated that government teams could not reach around 50,000 people in Nazira and around 30,000 people in Sivasagar due to the severity of flooding.
The Chief Minister said the flooding in Upper Assam was linked to exceptionally heavy rainfall in Nagaland and parts of Assam. He added that Mon, Mokokchung, and Wokha districts of Nagaland, along with Charaideo in Assam, received very heavy rainfall between July 18 and 19.
