Bailey Bridge Damaged in Kamjong as Miscreants Suspected in Manipur Attack

A Bailey bridge over the Namban River in Kamjong district, Manipur, was reportedly destroyed in a suspected attack on Tuesday night. Residents said they heard a loud noise at around 10 pm, which they believed was caused by an explosion.

When people tried to cross the bridge at daybreak, they found it completely damaged and unusable. Locals said the bridge is the only road link that connects several nearby villages in the Sahamphung block to essential services, markets, and agricultural land.

Impact on access for villages in Sahamphung block

The Sahamphung block includes more than 10 villages, with the bridge serving as a key passage over the river. Residents also described the area around the bridge as remote, with limited settlements between Kamjong town and the crossing point.

Local accounts pointed to possible movement by armed groups through hills and riverine forest to reach the site. A local headman from Chahong Khunou said there are no settlements in the stretch between Kamjong town and the bridge other than Phaimol, a Kuki village that was reported destroyed during the ongoing conflict.

Telecom vehicle set on fire in separate incident

In a separate incident, a telecom vehicle travelling toward Chatric village was reportedly set ablaze by armed miscreants. This was reported alongside the bridge damage after locals heard the explosion-like sound near the Namban River.

Residents alleged that the bridge attack was carried out by armed Kuki militants, but no group has claimed responsibility so far. Locals said materials suspected to be explosive residue were found scattered at the site. A team from Kamjong police rushed to the location and began an investigation into both incidents, with officials collecting on-ground evidence for verification. Bridge damage and telecom vehicle fire have raised concerns about disruptions to basic movement in the area.
