A six-member Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT) visited flood-ravaged Charaideo district to assess the damage from this year’s floods in Assam. The team is led by Ministry of Home Affairs Joint Secretary M Ramachandrudu and includes senior officials from the Central Water Commission, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Rural Development, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, and the National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC).
Inspection begins in Sumoni and relief operations are reviewed
On Sunday, the delegation began its visit in Sumoni, one of the worst-affected villages. Officials inspected inundated homes and submerged agricultural fields. They also interacted with displaced residents and observed relief work taking place in the area.
Charaideo Deputy Commissioner Neha Yadav briefed the IMCT on how relief camps are operating and how essential supplies are being distributed. She also shared preliminary damage estimates. According to an official, detailed information on losses to roads, embankments and agricultural land was provided to help Assam secure adequate Central support.
The team reviewed rescue, relief and rehabilitation efforts during the tour. Officials took stock of the extent of damage to crops, property and local infrastructure. They are expected to use NRSC satellite data to understand the scale of destruction across the affected regions.
Multi-day assessment across four districts
The visit is part of a multi-day assessment that will cover four severely affected districts: Charaideo, Sivasagar, Jorhat and Golaghat. The assessment is scheduled to conclude on July 29 and will include reviews of relief operations, inspections of damaged infrastructure, and satellite-based evaluation.
Meanwhile, reports said the flood situation in Assam improved on Sunday as water levels receded in most affected areas that did not receive overnight rainfall. However, more than 6.5 lakh people across six districts continued to be affected, and the death toll from this year’s floods stood at 66. Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said Prime Minister Narendra Modi called him to take stock of the flood situation and that an Inter-Ministerial team had already reached Assam for ground assessment.
