Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang (Golay) has expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy at the under-construction Samardung Tunnel of the NHPC Teesta Stage VI Hydroelectric Project in Jholungey, Namchi district. The incident has reportedly resulted in the deaths of several workers due to a suspected gas leak inside the tunnel.
In a statement shared on his official Facebook page, the Chief Minister extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased workers. He said the entire state is in solidarity with the grieving families and added that people’s thoughts and prayers are with those who have lost their loved ones.
Rescue teams working to recover trapped workers
The Chief Minister said he is closely monitoring the rescue operation. He noted that multiple agencies are engaged in the mission, including the District Administration, Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority (SSDMA), Sikkim Police, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and Fire and Emergency Services. He also mentioned teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) operating from Pakyong and Siliguri.
Recovery efforts are underway to recover the bodies of the remaining workers believed to be trapped inside the tunnel, with all teams working together on the ground. The Chief Minister praised the dedication, courage, and professionalism of the personnel involved in the operation.
Departments directed to assist and follow safety standards
Chief Minister Tamang said he has instructed all relevant departments to provide every possible assistance and to speed up rescue work. He also emphasized maintaining the highest safety standards during the operation.
He urged the public to remain calm and to avoid spreading unverified information. He said affected workers and their families should continue to be in prayers as the rescue teams carry on their work. The Chief Minister reiterated that the State Government is fully committed to providing necessary support and making every effort for a safe and successful outcome.
