The Mizoram Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has urged the Mizoram government to oppose the proposed Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026. The party said the amendment could harm Christian organisations and NGOs in the state. Addressing a press conference, MPCC leaders said protecting Mizoram, its people and the Christian faith is a key commitment.
Memorandum seeks action involving churches, NGOs and MPs
According to the Congress, it submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Lalduhoma on July 23. The party asked the Chief Minister to lead a delegation that includes church leaders, NGO representatives and leaders of political parties to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The demand is to press for the withdrawal of the proposed Bill.
The MPCC also called on Mizoram’s Members of Parliament to speak against the legislation in Parliament. It said MPs should vote against the Bill if it is tabled for consideration.
Congress leaders said they had already organised a protest against the Bill at Vanapa Hall on July 21. They claimed that earlier amendments to the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act during the BJP-led NDA government made it harder for churches and NGOs in Mizoram to receive foreign funding.
Questioned government silence; criticised ZPM and MNF
The party said it was disappointed that the state government did not respond to the issue. It also pointed to church joint prayer meetings held on the matter and asked why the government remained silent. During the party’s weekly Political Session at Congress Bhavan on Friday, former MLA and MPCC Vice-President John Siamkunga reiterated the Congress stand.
Siamkunga accused both the ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) and the opposition Mizo National Front (MNF) of failing to take a clear position. He said both parties should have spoken out given the possible impact on Christian organisations and NGOs. The MPCC said it will continue to oppose any measure it believes is detrimental to the interests of Mizoram, regardless of other parties’ views.
