EMRS Gangyap sweeps all three girls’ titles in CBSE Northeast basketball meet

EMRS Gangyap, a remote school in West Sikkim, continued its strong run in CBSE basketball by sweeping all three girls’ titles at the CBSE Cluster 1 (North East Region) Basketball Championship 2026 in Guwahati. The three-day event was held at Miles Bronson Residential School from August 7 to 9.

Under-19 remains unbeaten since 2010

In the Under-19 girls’ category, EMRS Gangyap won the final against St. Francis De Sales, Guwahati, with a score of 51-16. The school said the title was significant because the Under-19 team has stayed unbeaten in the Northeastern leg of the CBSE championship since 2010. The 2026 win also marked the team’s 15th consecutive gold in the category.

The Under-19 side was captained by Tsomula Bhutia. The team included Deepshikha Subba, Anela Bhutia, Angela Bhutia, Edenla Bhutia, Minuma Limbboo, Rikila Bhutia, Ayestya Lepcha, Ameekso Limbboo, and Sangay Doma Bhutia.

In the Under-14 girls’ category, EMRS Gangyap secured its third consecutive gold medal since the category started in 2024. The team defeated Little Flower School, Assam, 36-04 in the final. The Under-14 squad was led by Yangden Lepcha and Esha Subba, with Norip Lepcha, Aamima Limbboo, Thinley Zangmula Bhutia, Tenzing Darkey Lepcha, Leeaom Lepcha, Siphora Bhutia, Dawa Cheaki Bhutia, Anna Limboo, Arungma Limbboo, and Dawa Lhamu Bhutia also playing.

Inaugural Under-17 title clinched

The Under-17 girls’ category was introduced in the tournament for the first time this year. EMRS Gangyap won the inaugural title after a 28-17 victory over St. Xavier’s School, Assam, in the final. The Under-17 team was led by Anumit Lepcha and included Nunam Phung Limbboo, Elemit Lepcha, Phungnam Limbboo, Samikcha Tamang, Ahista Limbboo, Anushka Limbboo, Alvina Limbboo, Phurzay Lepcha, Anytra Limbboo, Edenla Lepcha, and Tenzing Doma Bhutia.

While the girls’ teams dominated, the EMRS Gangyap boys narrowly missed a semifinal berth. They lost 35-37 to St. Francis De Sales, Guwahati, in the quarterfinals. The championship involved 123 teams from 58 schools across the Northeastern states. Coaches for the EMRS Gangyap teams were Sidharth Yonzone, with support from Pem C. Lepcha and Tshogyal Dolma Bhutia, and team management included Namgyal Sherpa and Rinku.
