Manipur weightlifters Rishikanta Singh and Bindyarani Devi welcomed at Imphal Airport
Chanambam Rishikanta Singh and Sorokhaibam Bindyarani Devi received a hero’s welcome at Imphal Airport after winning silver and bronze in the Commonwealth Games
Chanambam Rishikanta Singh, a silver medallist in the men’s 60 kg weightlifting event, and Sorokhaibam Bindyarani Devi, a bronze medallist in the women’s 58 kg category, arrived at Imphal Airport on Monday. The two athletes were greeted by state officials, members of the All Manipur Weightlifting Association, family and friends, along with students from the National Sports Academy (NSA).

At the airport, the welcome also saw the presence of MLA Dr Sapam Ranjan Singh. Supporters and students gathered to celebrate the athletes’ performance at the recently concluded Glasgow Commonwealth Games. Rishikanta competed in the men’s 60 kg category, while Bindyarani took part after the women’s weightlifting division moved to the 58 kg category.
Speaking to media persons, Rishikanta said he was happy to win a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games. He mentioned that coming from a small state like Manipur made the achievement feel even more special. He also credited the start of his journey to training at the National Sports Academy and said he will work harder to improve his performance in future events.
Bindyarani expressed gratitude to her family, friends and well-wishers for the warm reception. She urged people in the state to continue supporting athletes. She also said her international achievement would not have been possible without help from her parents, coaches and supporters.
State sports officials highlight women’s progress
Naorem Praveen Singh, Secretary cum Commissioner of the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports (YAS), praised both medallists for their performances at the Glasgow Games. He said their results reflect the value of determination and perseverance. He also pointed to the strong showing of women from Manipur at the Commonwealth Games, saying they have continued to excel beyond sports as well.The YAS Secretary cum Commissioner further noted that weightlifter Saikhom Mirabai Chanu and boxer M Jadumani Singh have been confirmed for participation in the upcoming Asian Games, adding to the focus on athletes preparing for the next major competitions.
