Flood conditions in Upper Assam worsened on Monday after a key stretch of National Highway-37, now known as NH-715, near Teok was submerged. The inundation brought road movement on the corridor to a near standstill and disrupted connectivity across several districts.
NH-37 (NH-715) inundation leaves vehicles stranded
Floodwaters overtopped sections of the highway, leaving long queues of trucks, buses, private vehicles and emergency service vehicles stuck for several kilometres. Commuters reported being held up for hours, while transport of essential commodities and fuel supplies was also affected.
The Teok stretch is described as a crucial road link connecting Jorhat, Sivasagar, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia and other parts of Upper Assam. With the highway inundated, normal transportation has been severely disrupted, adding to the difficulties faced by residents in flood-affected areas.
Advisories and diversion routes for drivers
Officials said heavy rainfall has inundated large parts of Jorhat, Sivasagar and nearby districts. Overflowing rivers, waterlogging in low-lying areas and embankment breaches have compounded the situation. In response, traffic authorities and the district administration advised motorists to avoid unnecessary travel through the affected stretch until water levels recede.
The Assam government issued a temporary traffic advisory after multiple stretches along the Guwahati-Dibrugarh highway were affected. Dibrugarh district administration said vehicles moving from Guwahati to Dibrugarh are being diverted from Kaliabor via Tezpur, Biswanath Chariali and the Bogibeel Bridge. The diversion is set to continue until floodwaters fall and traffic can resume safely on the highway sections.
Rail services in Upper Assam have also been impacted. The Northeast Frontier Railway reported that rising water levels in the Dikhow River inundated the Simalguri railway yard. Engineering officials suspended train operations on the Simalguri-Namti Ali and Simalguri-Seleng Hat sections, leading to cancellations, diversions, short origination and short termination of several trains. Authorities said rescue and relief efforts are underway in several flood-hit districts and the situation is being closely monitored.
