GMC and GNS launch “WOW Warriors League” to boost school cleanliness and waste management
Gangtok Municipal Corporation and GNS have launched a two-month WOW Warriors League pilot, with participating schools competing on cleaning and waste management
Gangtok Municipal Corporation (GMC) and GNS launched the pilot “WOW Warriors League” on Monday with a focus on environmental responsibility among students. The initiative is designed as a student-led campaign aimed at encouraging leadership, learning, and behaviour change around cleanliness and waste management in schools.
The league runs for two months and uses a gamified and measurable format. Participating schools will take part in school-based cleanliness and waste management drives, earning points based on their performance. Officials from GMC and GNS will monitor and evaluate the activities through a judging panel.

Competition with teams from six schools
The launch programme was attended by Education minister Raju Basnett as the chief guest, along with Urban Development minister Bhoj Raj Rai, Gangtok MLA Delay Namgyal Barfungpa, GMC mayor Tsering Palden Bhutia, Urban Development commissioner-cum-secretary Jitendra Singh Raje, and GMC commissioner Gary Chopel. Education and urban development representatives, along with department secretaries, principals, teachers, and students, took part in the event and encouraged students to participate actively.
Six schools will represent teams in the league. Deorali Girls’ Senior Secondary will compete as “Leafora Warriors”, Tashi Namgyal Academy as “Zero Waste Champions”, Tashi Namgyal Senior Secondary School as “TNSS Trailblazers”, West Point Senior Secondary School as “West Point Green Guardians”, Enchey Senior Secondary School as “Enchey Eco Avengers”, and Tadong Senior Secondary School as “Tadong Musketeers”.
Award plan and planned weekly motivation
At the inaugural ceremony, students and team captains received league jackets and caps. They also took a pledge to keep schools and communities clean and to act with social responsibility. Introductory videos were shown for each team, highlighting their members and readiness for the campaign.
To maintain momentum during the two-month period, weekly giveaways and gifts will be given for outstanding performance and innovation. The league winners are set to be announced on October 5. The top team’s school will be rewarded with a washroom facility, while the winning team will also receive an Exo Excursion Tour. Organisers said the league is meant to serve as a model for future environmental initiatives by building long-term habits and practical action among students.
