Manipur Chief Minister Khemchand Singh has announced a 15-day deadline for people to surrender illegal weapons. He said the announcement was made during a programme titled “Display on the Initiatives towards bringing Normalcy in Manipur” held at the 1st Battalion Manipur Rifles Parade Ground in Imphal.
The chief minister said anyone who does not surrender weapons within the given period will be dealt with in accordance with the law. He also linked the announcement to the continuing impact of the crisis that began on May 3, 2023, saying development in the state was affected during that time.
Peace outreach and law-and-order efforts
Singh said that after the new government took office on February 4, 2026, peace outreach initiatives were carried out in different districts. He added that during President’s Rule, the law-and-order situation was stabilised.
He also recalled a visit to Jiribam where he met representatives of communities including Hmar, Paite, Meitei and Meitei Pangal. Singh said community members shared a meal together and discussed working jointly for peace, describing it as a step toward reducing trust gaps.
Weapons recovered and security actions
During the programme, Singh said the arms and ammunition displayed were recovered by security personnel from February 5, 2026, to date. He stated that more than 1400 weapons had been recovered in this period and thanked teams led by senior police and security officers for the recovery efforts.
Manipur Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam warned of strict action against anyone involved in extortion, intimidation, and harassment of transporters on National Highways. He said the government plans to take action under the National Security Act against alleged extortionists and miscreants.
DGP Mukesh Singh said that between February and August 2026, Manipur Police and multiple central forces recovered 1422 firearms, over 7000 rounds of ammunition, and 1137 explosives. He also said 491 extremists were arrested, and that anti-narcotics operations were strengthened to protect young people. The programme included distribution of a publication titled “Manipur Marches to Peace” and screening of a short video on government initiatives.
