Manipur CM urges citizens to avoid bandhs and blockades amid daily disruption

Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh appealed to the public to refrain from bandhs and blockades and other forms of agitation. He made the appeal during a two-day Consultative Meeting cum Seminar on the Demographic Profile of Manipur in Imphal.

The Chief Minister said ongoing shutdowns and road blockades have affected normal life and the state’s economy. He added that such disruptions are felt not only within Manipur, but also beyond the state, as transport and supply routes are disturbed along highways.

Impact on daily wage earners and essential supplies

Singh said daily wage earners are among the most affected groups when protests lead to stoppages and curbs on movement. He also pointed to the problems faced by truck drivers, saying that the current blockade has left some drivers stranded on national highways while carrying essential goods to the state.

Speaking at the event, he assured that the government is ready to support steps that benefit the wider public. He also urged citizens to keep recommendations and actions within the provisions of the Constitution of India.

Demographic discussion and central-level work

Manipur Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam informed the gathering that the state government has already informed the Central Government of its willingness to conduct an NRC exercise under the constitutional and legal framework. He said a High-Level Committee under the Ministry of Home Affairs has been set up to study demographic changes in the country.

Konthoujam further indicated that even if people have political or ideological differences, they should work together for the larger interest of the public. The inaugural session was attended by officials including N. Ashok Kumar, Commissioner (Home), and Manipur State Population Commissioner M. Manimoham Meitei, along with leaders, academicians, and representatives from relevant departments.
