Churachandpur in Manipur saw flash flooding after heavy rainfall that began on Thursday afternoon, affecting several parts of the town and nearby localities. The Deputy Commissioner, Krishna Kumar, visited the flood-affected areas with district officials to assess damage and review ongoing relief work.
Local sources said heavy rain led to local streams and rivulets overflowing, triggering sudden floods in low-lying neighborhoods. Families living along the banks of these water bodies were among those hardest hit, and many residents moved to safer places. The Deputy Commissioner’s visit included interaction with affected families during the assessment.
Areas visited and relief distribution
The DC and his team visited several locations within Churachandpur town, including Sielmat, Lower Chapel Lane, Hiangtam Lamka, Chiengkonpang and Beulalane. During the visit, officials distributed relief materials. The administration also said a damage assessment is underway to support further assistance.
Officials worked alongside philanthropic organisations that have been involved in the search for a missing person. The district administration distributed drinking water and refreshments to the search teams and noted the contribution of the participating organisations.
Search continues after incident on Lanva River
A serious incident was reported along the Lanva River on Thursday, where Thangjohnson, son of the late Paukhanmung from New Lamka Vengnuam South, reportedly drowned while attempting to retrieve construction materials that had been swept away by strong currents during embankment work. According to the information available, there has been no trace of the missing person at the time of the visit.
The Deputy Commissioner was accompanied by Additional Deputy Commissioner Seiminthang Lenthang, Sub-Divisional Officers and other district administration officials as they carried out the on-ground review. Officials also assessed the situation around the Tuitha River, linked to the ongoing search operations.
