Manipur Deputy Chief Minister Losii Dikho laid the foundation stone for a proposed “Late Smt. Jamnabai Firodia North East India Bhavan – Rani Gaidinliu Girls’ Hostel” in Pune. The project is aimed at providing safe accommodation and educational support for students from the Northeast, with a focus on students coming from conflict-affected areas of Manipur.
Hostel to support girls from the Northeast studying in Pune
The foundation stone-laying ceremony took place at Gujar-Nimbalkarwadi in Katraj. The project is described as being developed by Sarhad, a Pune-based NGO that works in conflict-affected regions. The initiative is set to be built at an estimated cost of around Rs 10 crore.
Senior people attended the programme, including Force Motors Chairman Dr Abhay Firodia. Journalists from Manipur were also part of the event, namely Brozendra Ningomba, K Sarojkumar Sharma and Keisham Yaiphaba. The initiative also honours Rani Gaidinliu, a freedom fighter from the Zeliangrong community of Manipur, connecting her legacy with higher education support in western India.
Addressing the gathering, Dikho said the bhavan is meant to be more than a building. He described it as a shared commitment to supporting youth from across India. He also highlighted the goal of equal access to quality education and opportunities, noting the importance of the North Eastern region to the country’s heritage and progress.
“Home away from home” for students
Dikho said the proposed hostel would function as a “home away from home” and provide a safe and secure environment for personal growth and long-term success. He added that it would be especially important for students from Manipur who come to Pune for higher studies.
He also praised Sarhad for its education and community development work in Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir. Dikho thanked the Firodia family for its support and said the Manipur government would continue backing efforts that expand educational opportunities for students from the Northeast. Dr Abhay Firodia said that while the ceremony was modest, the project is expected to have a far-reaching impact in the years ahead.
