Meghalaya: Anti-narcotics team arrests two, seizes 32.64 grams of suspected heroin at Umiam
Two people were arrested in separate interceptions near Umiam in Ri-Bhoi district, after the Anti-Narcotics Task Force recovered 32.64 grams of suspected heroin
Two people were arrested and 32.64 grams of suspected heroin were seized in two separate interceptions in Meghalaya’s Ri-Bhoi district, officials said. The Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) carried out the operations at Umiam on Monday night.
Vehicle interception near Lad Umiam
In the first case, the ANTF set up a naka based on information from a confidential source. Around 7 pm on August 10, the team focused on a suspected drug peddler identified as Allan Marwein of Mawlai Nongkwar, Block 13. According to the ANTF, Marwein was returning to Shillong from Guwahati after allegedly procuring heroin.
At around 9.30 pm, the interception was carried out near Lad Umiam. The team stopped a vehicle with registration number AS 01 AV 1166. Marwein, who was driving the vehicle, was detained. During the search, officials said a soap box containing a yellow-orange powder was recovered from beneath the left front seat. The powder, wrapped in black polythene, tested positive for heroin in a preliminary field test. The suspected contraband weighed 10.93 grams.
Another arrest after scooter rider tries to flee
In a second operation at around 11 pm, the ANTF stopped a suspected scooter with registration number ML 05 AB 9546 travelling towards Shillong. The rider, identified as Jaziel Nongjop Syiem, was detained after the team said he tried to flee when he noticed the naka.
Officials said two independent witnesses were called to observe the search and seizure proceedings under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. During a body search, the ANTF recovered two soap cases containing yellow-orange powder suspected to be heroin from inside Syiem’s jacket. The packets were wrapped in black polythene and kept inside a pink plastic bag. A preliminary field test returned positive for heroin, and the suspected contraband weighed 21.71 grams.
Officials said the two seizures together totalled 32.64 grams of suspected heroin. Legal proceedings are underway in both cases under the NDPS Act.
