Meghalaya Congress Youth demands action over alleged BJP youth leader’s social media remark

Meghalaya Youth Congress has demanded action against BJP Yuva Morcha state president Mewaker Lyngdoh Pakma after it alleged that he made a controversial social media post. The post, the Youth Congress said, called for protesters in New Delhi to be shot. The group described the remark as irresponsible and unbecoming of a political leader.

At a press conference on Tuesday, Youth Congress vice president Jonathan Syiem said the comment is especially disturbing because Pakma is also a practising lawyer and heads the youth wing of a national political party. Syiem said the BJP should initiate action and asked him to step down and be held accountable for the statement.

Congress Seva Dal links the issue to protests and students

Congress Seva Dal chief organiser Banphira Basaiawmoit also condemned the alleged remark, saying it was unacceptable to Congress and to citizens at large. Basaiawmoit said such comments reflect the BJP’s approach toward young people and democratic protests, while pointing to violence in Delhi that he said involved police and state machinery against protesters.

Basaiawmoit said the Congress has been supporting student protests in relation to alleged examination paper leaks. He argued that the issue goes beyond party politics, saying leaked papers damage students’ trust in the system and harm their families’ faith in the examination process. He also said protests in Shillong have not seen enough public participation and urged wider awareness of student-related concerns.

Party delegation to travel to New Delhi

The Congress announced a four-member delegation from the Meghalaya Congress, Youth Congress and Seva Dal will travel to New Delhi on Wednesday. The team will meet senior party leaders, interact with protesters and with students who were allegedly injured during recent demonstrations, and brief the party on the controversy involving Pakma’s remarks. Social activist Angela Rangad also condemned the alleged statement and called for suo motu legal action, alleging it was meant to incite violence and that it reflects a wider pattern of normalising hate speech and intimidation.
