Mizoram Congress stages protest at Raj Bhavan over actions against students in Delhi

Leaders and members of the Mizoram Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) gathered outside Raj Bhavan in Aizawl on the night of July 21. They staged the protest to oppose what they described as a crackdown on students in Delhi and to show solidarity with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.

Memorandum submitted to the Governor

The protest started at around 9 pm. After the gathering, MPCC leaders submitted a memorandum to the Governor. In the submission, they asked the Governor to forward the request to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The memorandum also urged the central government to withdraw FIRs filed against students in Delhi and to stop what the Congress described as police action against students protesting for their rights and future.

MPCC Senior Vice President Lalnunmawia Chuaungo addressed the crowd and said Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi were standing with the students in Delhi. He added that similar gatherings were being held outside Raj Bhavans across the country, with memorandums submitted through respective Governors to reach the Prime Minister.

Call for resignation and parliamentary discussion

Chuaungo said the MPCC supports the All India Congress Committee’s stand against the Centre on the issue. He criticised the central government for allegedly failing to protect students’ rights and demanded the immediate resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, saying he was primarily responsible for the situation.

He also called for a discussion in Parliament, alleging that despite irregularities and wrongdoing, appropriate action had not been taken by the Centre. Chuaungo said the Congress would continue to stand with students and youth across India if the central government did not respond, and that the party would remain in support of the students’ movement.
