The Mizoram government’s Social Welfare, Women and Child Development (SWW&CD) Department has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the SELCO Foundation to strengthen infrastructure and services at Anganwadi Centres across the state. The agreement covers 300 Anganwadi Centres (AWCs) and was signed in Aizawl in the presence of SWW&CD Minister Lalrinpuii.
Under the MoU, the SWW&CD Commissioner and Secretary Lalzarmawii and the SELCO Foundation’s Senior Project Manager Lalnuntluanga signed the document. The minister said the state is focused on ensuring children get safe, inclusive and supportive environments for growth and development. She also said the partnership will bring sustainable energy solutions into the way Anganwadi Centres operate.
Solarisation plan for Anganwadi Centres
The programme also highlighted the need for stronger monitoring at the field level. Lalrinpuii urged Child Development Project Officers (CDPOs) and Circle Officers (COs) to carry out more visits to Anganwadi Centres and maintain regular oversight. She said the initiative is expected to improve both infrastructure and service delivery, with benefits for women and children in Mizoram.
According to the department, the solarisation is planned using decentralised renewable energy and related infrastructure support. The SELCO Foundation said the aim is to make Anganwadi Centres more functional and energy-efficient, helping them better deliver key services. The collaboration is described as a step to strengthen community institutions and support early childhood development, nutrition and health services, including in remote or underserved areas.
Training and demonstration centres included
Officials said the solarisation of all 300 centres is targeted for completion by December 2026. The project is planned as a two-year collaboration and includes local capacity building to support long-term sustainability. Training will be provided to Anganwadi Workers, Anganwadi Helpers and government officials, focusing on operation and maintenance of the new systems.
The plan also includes upgrading ten Saksham Anganwadi Centres as demonstration sites. These centres are intended to showcase best practices and act as learning hubs for the wider network of Anganwadi Centres in the state.
