Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang (Golay) to take stock of the tragedy at the under-construction Samardung Tunnel of the NHPC Teesta Stage VI Hydroelectric Project in Jholungey, Namchi district. The call took place on Monday, and the two leaders discussed the status of the ongoing rescue operations.
PM expresses concern and offers assistance

According to the Chief Minister, the Prime Minister expressed deep concern about the incident and sent sympathies to the affected workers and their families. Modi also assured that the Government of India will provide all possible support for the rescue efforts and help the State in any way needed.
Chief Minister Tamang shared that the Prime Minister’s message of compassion and concern has brought strength and reassurance to people in Sikkim during a difficult time. Tamang also thanked Modi for the timely support and solidarity shown after the tragedy.
Rescue work continues with multiple agencies
Rescue operations are continuing at full speed, with coordinated efforts from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), the Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority (SSDMA), the District Administration, and Sikkim Police. Medical teams from Rangpo Primary Health Centre (PHC) are also involved, along with local residents supporting on-ground efforts.
These teams are working around the clock to locate those affected and provide possible assistance. The Chief Minister said the State has received assurances of continued support as rescue and relief operations proceed.
Tamang further noted that the Government of India remains committed to standing with Sikkim. His remarks were shared after he referenced his own engagement with the Prime Minister during the same period when he addressed people in Gangtok for the 88th birthday celebrations of 14th HH Dalai Lama.
