Nagaland has released Rs 70 lakh from the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) to support families affected by landslides and flash floods in Mon district. The incident followed incessant rainfall on July 19 and 20, which the district administration said caused damage across residential areas and key public infrastructure.
The funds were announced by the Deputy Commissioner and Chairman of the District Disaster Management Authority. As per the order, the money will be used for ex gratia assistance to the next of kin of those who died, gratuitous relief for injured people, and immediate support for houses that were damaged during the disaster.
Relief planned for families, injured people and damaged homes
The statement also said that the district administration is working in coordination with the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority and other local and state bodies. Search and rescue efforts are being carried out along with damage assessment, distribution of relief materials, and steps to restore essential services in the affected areas.
Mon district administration officials said the disaster resulted in nine deaths and injuries to others. It also affected roads, bridges, and other public infrastructure in the district, disrupting movement and daily activities for people living near affected stretches.
Chief Minister’s additional grant and ongoing operations
During a visit to the impacted areas on July 20, Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio extended an additional Rs 10 lakh grant to support civil society organisations, the District Hospital, and local volunteers engaged in search and rescue operations. Officials named several groups involved in the response, including district police, the State Disaster Response Force, 42 Assam Rifles, Territorial Army units, and line departments. Village and ward councils and community organisations were also part of the relief and assistance work.
As monsoon conditions continue, the district administration has advised residents to stay alert, avoid landslide-prone slopes, and refrain from moving near overflowing rivers and vulnerable roads. The administration also asked people to follow weather advisories and instructions issued by officials.
