Educated citizens, students and youth held a solidarity rally in Geyzing on Saturday to back educationist and innovator Sonam Wangchuk. The event was organised with a focus on the education system and the need for better governance, accountability and transparency.
The rally started from 10th Mile and ended at Geyzing Bazaar. After the walk, participants took part in an awareness programme that highlighted constitutional rights and the right to education, along with transparency in governance and accountability of elected governments.
Speakers demand reforms and greater accountability
Social activist and politician Prabin Sharma, along with Sagar Sharma and others, led the programme. Speakers said Wangchuk’s demands for transparency and merit-based educational policies are important, especially after controversies that they linked to alleged irregularities in examinations.
They also supported Wangchuk’s call for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, arguing that the ministry should be held responsible for gaps in the education system. Another concern raised at the rally was public confidence in examinations, with speakers alleging that corruption, nepotism and favouritism have affected opportunities for meritorious students.
Concerns raised over recruitment process in Sikkim
Speakers further alleged issues in recruitment, including concerns raised about the Sikkim Public Service Commission (SPSC) process. They demanded a fair investigation into what they described as irregularities in recruitment and criticised practices that they said continue to influence appointments through favouritism and improper advantage.
Advocate Doma Lepcha said questioning governments is a constitutional right and a key part of democracy. She described the protest linked to Wangchuk as a democratic effort aimed at reforms. The organisers said they plan to keep holding protest rallies until educational policies are strengthened and the alleged irregularities in the sector are addressed.
