NHPC Limited has confirmed that 10 workers died after a suspected methane gas explosion inside the under-construction Head Race Tunnel (HRT) for the 500 MW Teesta Stage VI Hydroelectric Project at Samardung in South Sikkim. The incident took place at 1:04 PM on July 20, during ongoing work at the tunnel site.
According to the company, a sudden burst of suspected methane gas from the rock layers triggered the explosion. NHPC said the blast released dense fumes and toxic gases inside the tunnel, trapping workers underground. The project team then activated its emergency response protocols.
Rescue teams and emergency agencies mobilised
Rescue and response work is being carried out in coordination with the District Administration and multiple emergency agencies. NHPC listed support from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Sikkim Police, and local authorities, along with other agencies involved in rescue operations.
NHPC also stated that a specialized Mines Safety rescue team from Dhanbad reached the site to assist with the operation. Engineering teams are working to stabilise the tunnel environment so that rescue personnel can continue their work safely and effectively.
Latest update on trapped workers and investigation
The company’s latest update said 25 workers were trapped inside the tunnel. NHPC confirmed that 10 deaths have been reported so far, while rescue teams continue to locate and evacuate the remaining workers from within the tunnel.
NHPC said senior management has reached the site to monitor the rescue efforts alongside district officials. The company added that it will conduct a thorough investigation to find the exact cause of the incident and also expressed its deepest condolences to the families of the affected workers, reaffirming support to rescue agencies and those impacted.
