Preparations are underway in Rangpo for the 2nd Aama Samman Diwas, which will be observed on August 10 together with the 9th Jan Unmukti Diwas. The programme is being planned as a tribute to the mothers of Sikkim, recognising their work within families and society.
On Tuesday, the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) leadership and party workers held a final preparatory meeting at Rangpo. The meeting was chaired by SKM Secretary General Arun Upreti and attended by ministers, MLAs, advisors, chairpersons, OSDs, party executives and members of frontal organisations. The group discussed the arrangements for the main programme at Rangpo Playground.
Award categories linked to Aama Sashaktikaran Yojana
The party said the event will include the presentation of two new awards under the Aama Samman initiative introduced by Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang-Golay, who is also the SKM president. The Aama Samman Puraskar will recognise one deserving mother from each constituency with a cash award of Rs 51,000. The selection is to be made from mothers who are not beneficiaries of the Aama Sashaktikaran Yojana.
Another award, the Pragatisheel Aama Puraskar, will honour three mothers who have used the financial assistance under the Aama Sashaktikaran Yojana. The cash prizes are Rs 5 lakh, Rs 3 lakh and Rs 2 lakh respectively. SKM officials said the awards are meant to acknowledge both support and outcomes from the yojana.
Venue shift explained as logistical decision
SKM political secretary and spokesperson Bikash Basnet said the programme was initially planned for Namchi this year, but the venue was shifted to Rangpo due to traffic-related concerns and other logistical issues. He also said that while Aama Samman Diwas is a government programme organised by the Social Welfare Department, SKM workers and the state government are coordinating because the date coincides with 9th Jan Unmukti Diwas.
Another SKM spokesperson, Jacob Khaling, said August 10 is significant for the party because it marks the release of the Chief Minister from imprisonment, as described by SKM. He added that earlier the workers had planned to celebrate their leader on the day, but the programme was dedicated to mothers of Sikkim through Aama Samman Diwas. Khaling stated that arrangements are being made for traffic management on the day of the celebration.
