Security forces conducted a surprise combing operation in areas under Ukhrul and Kamjong districts on Tuesday morning, including TM Kasom, Lungphu and Sharkaphung (Sikibung). Residents said they were not informed in advance, and the operation began early, catching families off guard.

According to people in the area, teams entered homes and searched church premises while members were gathered for a meeting. Eyewitness accounts also said a church compound was searched around 8 am while a half-yearly audit meeting was underway at the pastor’s quarters in TM Kasom.

Four residents detained from Sharkaphung

During the searches, four local residents from Sharkaphung (Sikibung) were detained. A village headman said a complaint has been lodged with the Litan Police Station.

The four detained people were identified by locals as Wungphayo Kasar (24), A.S. Ninglum (29), Yaoreingam Lungleng (24), and Vareiyo Lungleng (56). Their names were provided through the village leadership and reports from people present during the operation.

Community demands release and raises concerns

As the situation developed, the Working Committee of the Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) demanded the immediate release of the four detained villagers within 24 hours. The TNL said the four were taken between 8 am and 9 am, and that their whereabouts were not clear at the time of the group’s statement.

The committee also alleged that security forces carried out operations in specific Tangkhul villages including TM Kasom and Sharkaphung, while Kuki villages, which it described as the centres of violence, remained untouched. The TNL said the operations could worsen tensions and lead to civil unrest if the detainees are not freed.

In parallel, local accounts mentioned that the house of a retired Indian Army serviceman was searched during the combing operation. Meanwhile, local political comments were reported in connection with defending a project, though no details were provided in the available feed.
