Kohima puts movement curbs on pigs after African Swine Fever confirmed

Containment measures have been announced in parts of Kohima after African Swine Fever (ASF) was confirmed in several villages under Kohima district. The Deputy Commissioner of Kohima, B. Henok Buchem, issued the notification following laboratory test reports received from the Office of the Chief Veterinary Officer, Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services.

The order names Rütsie, P. Khel, Kohima Village, and Mezoma Village as locations where ASF was detected. Based on the notification, a 1-km Infected Zone has been defined around the affected premises, while a 10-km Surveillance Zone has also been put in place to monitor the situation.

Ban on pig movement and closure of pork markets

Within the Infected and Surveillance Zones, the administration has imposed an immediate ban on the import, export, and movement of live pigs and pork products. The notification also directs that pork markets and butcher shops inside the designated areas remain closed until further notice.

In addition, pig farmers have been asked to restrict visitors to their farms. They have also been instructed to disinfect farm premises regularly and to report any unusual illness or deaths among pigs to the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services without delay.

Carcass disposal and warnings to the public

The directive lays out specific handling for pig carcasses. It says carcasses should be disposed of through safe burial following the prescribed protocols. The order also states that dumping carcasses in rivers, streams, or open areas is strictly prohibited.

The public has been advised to stay vigilant and avoid purchasing or consuming pork from unknown or unverified sources. The Deputy Commissioner further warned that anyone who violates the notified directives may face prosecution under the Prevention and Control of Infectious and Contagious Diseases in Animals Act, 2009, along with other applicable provisions of law.
