Assam’s flood-related death toll has risen to 85, while more than 1.36 lakh people continue to be affected across seven districts. Floodwaters have started to recede in some areas, but thousands of residents are still displaced and dealing with ongoing hardship.
The Assam State Disaster Management Authority’s flood report, dated August 2, says the impact is spreading beyond people. Agricultural land remains submerged in several locations, affecting day-to-day life and local livelihoods.
Relief and rehabilitation efforts continue in worst-hit areas
Among districts, Sivasagar is listed as one of the worst-affected. Even as water levels lower, residents continue to face severe difficulties. The state government has stepped up relief and rehabilitation measures, including steps aimed at long-term mitigation.
The disaster report also details the scale of damage to livestock. In total, 24,460 animals have been affected by the current flooding, including 13,835 large animals, 9,754 small animals, and 871 poultry birds. Dhemaji is reported as the most affected district for animals, with 10,527 animals impacted, including 6,310 cattle and buffaloes and over 4,000 goats and sheep. Golaghat follows with 9,077 affected animals, while Jorhat has reported 3,114 and Sivasagar 1,742, including 851 poultry birds.
Interim financial support for flood-affected families
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma distributed interim flood relief to affected families during a programme held at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat in Dibrugarh. Under the initiative, the state will provide around ₹112 crore as interim financial assistance to nearly 75,000 flood-affected families.
Each eligible family will receive ₹15,000, credited directly through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system. The discharge is planned for beneficiaries in four districts between August 3 and August 5, including Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat, and Golaghat. After the programme, the Chief Minister travelled to Sivasagar to review the flood situation and interact with affected people.
Actor Randeep Hooda also joined a relief distribution event in Sivasagar, distributing rations and essential supplies to flood victims. He highlighted that many families remain stranded in areas where floodwaters run deep.
