A sudden and powerful cloudburst hit the Tamak region of Chamoli district in Uttarakhand, washing away a recently constructed bridge built by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO). The incident disrupted a key route that connects Joshimath to the Niti and Malari areas, which are close to the India–China border.
Bridge collapse cuts access to Niti Valley route
The flash flood struck on Monday, when a strong surge of water, mud and debris moved through the Tamak nala. The nala is reported to be about 37 kilometres ahead of Joshimath. Local eyewitness accounts and visuals from the site show the force of the water, and reports indicate that several vehicles that were parked or moving in the area were swept away.
The bridge had been built to support year-round access in the region. With the stream overflowing and the crossing unable to withstand the pressure, the bridge collapsed, leaving connectivity severed. This affected residents, traders and security personnel who depend on the route for travel to and from the border villages in and around the Niti Valley corridor.
District advisory issued; rescue and assessment teams deployed
After the incident, the Chamoli district administration issued an advisory asking people to avoid unnecessary travel in the affected area. The administration also asked residents to stay alert as adverse weather conditions continued. Rescue and assessment teams were sent to the site to evaluate the extent of damage.
The BRO is working with district authorities to assess destruction and prepare steps for restoration. Officials said debris clearing and rebuilding may be difficult because the area is mountainous, and rainfall has continued. They added that restoring the road link to the Niti Valley remains a priority due to its strategic importance.
The cloudburst is part of a wider pattern of disruption in Uttarakhand’s hill districts, where sustained heavy rainfall has triggered landslides, flash floods and infrastructure failures in Chamoli and neighbouring Rudraprayag. Authorities have not released a final estimate of losses yet, as ground assessments are still underway. No casualties were reported so far in connection with the Tamak incident.
