Heavy rainfall has led to widespread damage in Nagaland, with Mon district reported as the worst-hit area. Local authorities said landslides and flash floods damaged homes, disrupted road links, and forced rescue teams to work across affected pockets.
The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) reported that at least nine people died in the disaster. Of these, five deaths were reported from Shantham ward in Mon district, while four people were still missing. Search and rescue continued as teams tried to locate those unaccounted for.
Rescue and recovery from Mon’s landslide sites
According to the Department of Information and Public Relations (DIPR), on the second day of search and rescue operations, two bodies were recovered from the landslide site at Defence Colony in Thamnan ward. The deceased were identified as Taotun (52), from Oting village, and Lunglei (13), from Pongkong village, both residents of Thamnan ward. Rescue teams also pulled out three injured persons and shifted them for medical treatment.
Across the state, NSDMA said rain-related damage was not limited to Mon. Tuensang district reported destruction to homes in multiple villages, with 22 houses completely destroyed and 25 partially damaged, affecting about 200 people across 12 villages.
Damage reported in other districts
Longleng district recorded five kutcha houses completely destroyed and another five partially damaged across nine villages. In Kiphire, landslides affected eight villages, with preliminary reports indicating damage to seven houses. Zunheboto saw landslides and flooding affecting around 30 villages. Shamator reported widespread landslides across six villages affecting about 7,000 people.
Further reports from NSDMA listed heavy rain, landslides, and mudslides in other areas, including Mokokchung and several villages in Noklak, Wokha, and Meluri, where damage assessment was still underway. Authorities said search and rescue operations are continuing in affected districts, while efforts to restore essential services and complete detailed damage assessments are in progress.
District administrations also advised residents to avoid landslide-prone areas, overflowing rivers, and vulnerable slopes during the ongoing rain spell and to follow local advisories.
