JP Nadda visits Mon in Nagaland, assures Centre’s support after landslides and flash floods

Union Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda visited Mon district in Nagaland and met families affected by recent landslides and flash floods. He interacted with people at the Konyak Union Office and expressed solidarity, saying the incident was disheartening and painful. Nadda said the devastation he witnessed showed the scale of hardships faced by residents in the aftermath of the calamity.

Nadda assures help for relief and restoration

During the interaction, Nadda told those present that the Government of India would work to support relief and restoration efforts. He also said a central team would be sent to assist the relief operations. Nadda conveyed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s message of condolence and solidarity to the families of victims, and added that many people and the government were standing with Mon.

Deputy Commissioner Wennyei Konyak briefed the Union Minister on the disaster situation. He said incessant heavy rainfall triggered floods and landslides at multiple locations, damaging roads, bridges, and other public infrastructure. The Deputy Commissioner also said some villages saw temporary disruption of road connectivity, and several houses were damaged. He noted that power and water supply were temporarily affected in certain areas, while some families were displaced and required support.

According to the district briefing, relief camps and temporary shelters were set up where needed. Essential items such as food grains, drinking water, medicines, and other commodities were being distributed to affected families. The presentation also highlighted that the worst-hit areas included Defence Colony and adjoining locations, where landslides led to severe damage.

Monsoon damage assessed; emergency response acknowledged

NSDMA and DDMA Mon officials presented details of the monsoon damage and an interim assessment. They said heavy rainfall on July 19 and 20 led to catastrophic landslides and flash floods across Mon district. The presentation cited rainfall data from an Automatic Weather Station, including 83.95 mm on July 19, and a cumulative total of 341 mm from July 19 to 31. Video footage of affected areas was also shown to the visiting team.

Nadda was informed about relief initiatives led by the district administration, along with support from local groups including the Konyak Union, Konyak Students’ Union, and Konyak Nyupuh Sheko Khong. The officials and the minister acknowledged the role of the Superintendent of Police, SDRF personnel, civil society organisations, and volunteers who participated in rescue and relief work. Konyak Union president Yamao Konyak said the visit conveyed that Mon was not alone during a difficult period.
