Landslide at Phesama sinking zone disrupts traffic on NH-2 linking Nagaland and Manipur

A landslide at the Phesama sinking zone along National Highway-2 has disrupted traffic on the main road connecting Nagaland and Manipur. Authorities said the affected stretch is on the Kohima–Mao section of NH-2, where rain-slope instability has led to debris and road disturbance.

Officials conducted an on-site inspection at the Phesama sinking zone between Chainage Km 191+840 and Km 192+100. The inspection was carried out by Deputy Commissioner of Kohima B. Henok Buchem along with Senior Superintendent of Police Krodi Rhetso, and other officials from the District Administration, PWD (R&B), NHIDCL, and local stakeholder groups.

Safety measures and debris clearance plan

After reviewing the road condition, the team discussed steps to keep commuters safe while restoring movement. Officials decided to deploy earthmoving machinery at the site for continuous debris clearance. The aim is to reduce the risk of further obstruction and support faster clearing of the affected area.

The authorities also planned additional visibility and warnings for motorists. Two lighting units and traffic warning signboards are to be installed at both ends of the sinking zone. Officials said these measures will help monitor possible rockfall and improve safety for vehicles passing through the stretch.

Traffic regulation and alternate route

Deputy Commissioner Buchem said debris clearance will continue on a regular basis. A full-day clearance operation is set to be carried out from 6 am to 6 pm on Sunday. Traffic police personnel will be deployed at the site to regulate movement and manage congestion.

Buchem also advised commuters, especially those travelling at night, to use the alternative route via Kisama. Officials at the affected stretch have been directed to stay in constant communication with the district administration and police, and to take timely decisions, including temporary road closures when needed for public safety.
