Meghalaya holds anti-drug awareness programme with actor John Abraham
Meghalaya’s Social Welfare Department organised an anti-drug awareness programme in Taraghar with actor John Abraham, students, recovery champions and officials
Meghalaya intensified its anti-drug awareness efforts on Friday by organising a programme that brought together students, recovering drug users, government officials and actor-producer John Abraham. The event was held at the State Guest House in Taraghar.
Sports, fitness and discipline used to steer youth away from drugs
The programme was organised by the Social Welfare Department in collaboration with the Drug Reduction, Elimination and Action Mission (DREAM). It was conducted under the theme “Pulse of the Hills: Every Beat Against Drugs.” Social Welfare Adviser Bah Paul Lyngdoh attended as the chief guest, while John Abraham joined as the special guest.
During an interactive session, Abraham addressed students and spoke about the role of discipline and fitness in helping young people avoid substance abuse. He encouraged students to stay away from peer pressure and to choose healthier lifestyles through sports and physical activity.
Abraham also highlighted his connection with Shillong and the Northeast. He said he believes the region can develop world-class footballers, pointing to his interest in football and his work connected to Northeast United FC. He thanked Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma for support toward sports development, and said the football academy near Shillong is expected to be ready within the next two years.
Vehicle inaugurated for rehabilitation centre in Tura
The event included support for rehabilitation and outreach under the state’s anti-drug campaign. The Social Welfare Department inaugurated a vehicle, supported through the DREAM Mission, for the Asha Bhavan Rehabilitation Centre in Tura. The vehicle is meant to strengthen rehabilitation work and reach people who need support.
Officials and speakers also focused on prevention, treatment and recovery. Social Welfare Director Saloni Verma said the programme reflects government efforts under the DREAM Mission, launched in 2022. Personal recovery stories were shared as well, including a session featuring Recovery Champion Marvin B. Warjri of the Meghalaya Users’ Forum and a presentation by youth icon and fitness influencer Dapalei Linna Warjri titled “Fit Over Fix.” The event also saw a musical performance aimed at promoting hope and resilience.
