Assam down town University (AdtU) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with UPES, Dehradun, to work together on research, innovation and skill development in emerging technologies. The partnership is aimed at responding to developmental needs in Northeast India through collaborative projects across multiple technical areas.
The MoU was signed by Joutishman Dutta, Vice President and Managing Trustee of AdtU, and Dr Sunil Rai, Vice Chancellor of UPES. Officials from both institutions attended the signing event, including representatives from UPES’s School of Health Sciences, School of Advanced Engineering and School of Computer Science. Faculty members from AdtU, including those from the Faculty of Computer Technology and the university’s PhD Cell, also joined the programme virtually.

Research and training focus on emerging technology
According to a statement from AdtU, the collaboration will cover areas such as artificial intelligence, disaster resilience, clean energy, hydrogen technologies and Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS). It also includes critical minerals, geographic information systems (GIS), digital health, smart agriculture, rural technologies, biodiversity conservation and climate adaptation.
The universities also plan to introduce joint PhD programmes. They will undertake collaborative research projects and support faculty and student exchanges. The plan includes steps to encourage technology transfer and startup and incubation initiatives, along with capacity-building and skill development programmes for students and researchers.
UPES to share expertise for disaster monitoring and health tech
As part of the agreement, UPES will contribute expertise in areas linked to disaster preparedness and advanced technologies. This includes AI-powered flood prediction and early warning systems, GIS-based disaster monitoring, hydrogen exploration and critical mineral assessment. UPES will also support CCUS technologies and AI-enabled biomedical devices for early detection of breast cancer.
AdtU said the MoU is intended to strengthen research, technology development and entrepreneurship while contributing to sustainable development initiatives across the Northeast.
