Sikkim Akademi has launched Pathak 2026, a literary competition meant to build a reading habit around Nepali literature among young people in Gangtok and beyond. The initiative was announced at a press conference on Monday, with the Akademi saying it aims to encourage participants to read and share their understanding through different literary forms such as poems, prose, short stories and novels.
The Akademi said around 30 Nepali books have been shortlisted for the challenge. Each registered participant will pick one book from the approved list, read it, and then present their views. The competition is also connected to the upcoming observance of Nepali BhasaManyataDiwas on August 20, a day marked for the inclusion of Nepali in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution in 1992.

Two-phase competition with video submissions
According to the organisers, the contest will be held in two phases. In the first round, participants will record a video sharing their views on the selected book and submit it to the Akademi using a designated WhatsApp number. A three-member jury will review these entries and shortlist the top 10 participants for the final round.
In the final round, the shortlisted participants will present their views in person before the jury. The Akademi also set a schedule for the competition. Video submissions must be completed by August 10, and the grand finale will take place on August 18, ahead of the BhasaManyataDiwas observance, when winners will be felicitated.
Eligibility and prizes
The challenge is open only to residents of Sikkim who are below 40 years of age. Participants must submit valid age proof. The Akademi also appealed to students of Class X and above, along with other literature enthusiasts up to 40 years, to take part. For those who cannot access a chosen book, the Akademi said copies may be borrowed from its side.
Winners of Pathak 2026 will receive cash prizes of Rs 50,000 for first place, Rs 25,000 for second and Rs 10,000 for third. The remaining seven finalists will receive consolation prizes and certificates. Registration can be done by contacting 97759-10914.
