Sikkim National Law University receives Bar Council of India approval for BA LLB

Sikkim National Law University (SNLU), Gangtok, said it has received approval from the Bar Council of India (BCI) to confer law degrees. The university said the recognition was granted under Section 7(1)(i) of the Advocates Act, 1961, for the purpose of awarding law degrees.

BCI approval for five-year BA LLB (Hons) for 2026-27

SNLU also reported that the BCI approved its five-year BA LLB (Hons) integrated degree programme for the academic session 2026-27. The approved intake is two sections of 60 students each. The university said the BCI decision was taken after its Standing Committee of the Legal Education Committee considered the inspection report submitted by its inspection team.

The university said it had applied to the BCI through its Centre of Legal Education for both recognition and fresh approval for the 2026-27 BA LLB (Hons) programme. It added that BCI officials conducted an online inspection on July 12, and the council later considered the inspection report and other aspects of the programme before granting the decision.

Programme intake also regularised for 2025-26

Along with the 2026-27 approval, SNLU said the BA LLB (Hons) programme intake had been regularised for the academic session 2025-26. The university added that the recognition applies to law degrees awarded through the programme as approved, including the specified intake, campus and mode of conduct mentioned in the BCI communication.

SNLU noted that the approval is subject to compliance with the continuing standards and requirements set by the BCI. It said the university was established in Gangtok as a statutory university under the Sikkim National Law University Act, 2018. SNLU currently runs its five-year BA LLB and LL.M programmes and has also started its PhD programme from the current academic session.
